Travis felt the weight of the bottle in his hand and, in that moment, felt vulnerable. He unscrewed the lid, the aroma of whiskey mingling with the cabin's oak and leather. Each note carried a memory, each scent a temptation. He lifted the bottle to his lips and paused. A gust of wind snapped him back to reality, but the whispers of doubt lingered. The canal memory surged: icy water slamming against his body, his mother's voice trembling, 'I've already lost your father—I can't lose you too.'
That night, he'd vowed never to drink again. But now, alone in the cabin, the amber glow of the bottle seemed both an invitation and a threat.
